Farm Building Bat Assessment
Challenge
At the time, I was operating in support of a licensed bat ecologist to deliver a farm building assessment and associated survey support.
Approach
Conducted a detailed preliminary roost assessment of three structures, identifying features with moderate–high bat roost potential. Followed up with two dusk emergence surveys during optimal weather windows.
Outputs
Full PRA report with photographic evidence, two emergence survey reports, species identification (common and soprano pipistrelle), and clear recommendations for a mitigation licence application.
Outcome
Reports delivered within agreed timelines. The consultancy submitted the planning application on schedule, and the local authority accepted the survey work without additional information requests.
Multi-Month Static Detector Programme
Challenge
An accumulation of static deployment data required analysis across multiple projects, creating a backlog the client needed to clear quickly.
Approach
Over one week, I processed more than 300 detector-nights of acoustic data using automated classifiers with manual verification, and applied a standardised QA approach across all projects.
Outputs
Comprehensive species lists with confidence ratings, activity summaries, and consolidated reporting outputs provided inline with the client’s reporting requirements.
Outcome
The consultancy reported that the analysis saved approximately three weeks of internal work and provided a higher level of species identification confidence than their previous approach.
Infrared Footage Review & Behaviour Tagging
Challenge
A client had a backlog of thermal and near-infrared camera footage from various projects that needed review.
Approach
Provided a fixed-price footage review with behaviour tagging, and supplied feedback on footage limitations, primarily relating to near-infrared recordings.
Outputs
Detailed behaviour log with timestamps, species/group identification, annotated video clips of key events (emergence sequences, re-entries), and a summary report characterising the roost.
Outcome
For one of the projects, the review helped confirm a brown long-eared maternity roost, enabling the consultancy to accurately characterise the roost and design appropriate mitigation measures for the planning application.
